My iMAC 24 Inch dual core (purchased in late 2006) will not start up...

I have never had a problem with my iMAC until now. When I turn on the power, the system starts to power up as normal but never gets thru the initialization. little wheel and/or colored ball keeps "thinking". eventually I get some different errors, such as disk inserted not readable, (there is no disk inserted), eventually the icons on the bottom of the screen appears, however, not my desk top. when you click on firefox it appears stuck, and so on, basically will not start up....

Is there a deceint manual for the iMac 24?

I just bought an iMac w/ 24 inch screen. This is my first Mac after years of PC's. It ain't anything like the PC. There was a little dinky instruction manual that tells you nothing. Is there anything such as a comprehensive instruction manual? Are there anything like short cuts as in PC's?...
