my thermostat is way off

My landlord installed a new thermostat and now, even if I set it at 80+ it turns off the furnace around 50 degrees. The thermostat is working correctly; I took off the outer ring and sure enough the coil is coiled such that the mercury switch turns it off at about 50. How can I adjust the relationship between the numbers on the dial and the tightness of the coil?...
