nakamichi dr-3 idler tire

i have a nakamichi dr-3. it will rewind and fast forward but when you push play it trys to play the tape, cannot or does not, and then goes into stop mode. i was wondering. does this sound like something that would be fixed by replacing the idler tire. and if so is it easy to replace the tire and how is this done. please let me know and thanks!...
