Brand new mic died after less than one second having inserted brand new battery. I had exactly the same experience with a previos NT4 which the supplier replaced. Is this a common fault?

Rode stereo mic - died after new battery inserted. The light comes on for an instant then dies. The mic is unuseable now. Supplier may offer to replace - but am too worried to go this way a third time? What seems to be the core problem? I made a special point of handling the mic with the greatest care, storing it in its heavy duty case and handling like a baby. ...
